I have a domain and web space. I want to have a blog where I can do more extensive writing than what Twitter allows. I want to be able to visually customize it to some extent. I also don't know the first thing about web development and can't afford to pay anyone. What do I do?

Yeah, Wordpress is the super easy route. Security tip: If you're going to self-host on a hosting provided, make sure you keep WP, plugins and themes patched. Or you could just host on http://wordpress.com with your own domain for $4/mo and let them worry about it.
Thanks! I'm diving into Wordpress and it seems like a pretty nice system, albeit one with an enormous attack surface. That said, it looks like it fits my needs nicely.

Your option for zero attack surface is to go with a static page generator like Octopress, Jekyll, or Hugo and then host on github or out of an S3 bucket. Write posts in .md, generate html and push. https://github.com/myles/awesome-static-generators …
