Looking at it through an objective lens rather than a rose-tinted one, it's one of many early computer games that effectively substituted player-abusive mechanics in place of a cohesive and comprehensible game design.

Unpopular opinion time: Montezuma's Revenge was fun, but objectively not that great of a game. The later rooms that were 100% dark, and required you to waste lives learning the layout by rote, were just awful.

Played the hell of it on the colecovision. I just replayed the early levels then restarted. In retrospect you are right!
