I hate to challenge you, but: Why not? In such a position of privilege you would be less likely to suffer consequences for being open about being on the autism spectrum, not more likely. It's the little people like us who suffer for being open about it.

Their position of privilege isn't necessarily their fault. I wouldn't hold famous people to potentially unrealistic expectations... Don't tell other people whether or not it's "okay" for them to do something nice. It's made less nice by your expectation, anyway.

Well, good news, I'm not tweeting at Stephen Spielberg or Dan Aykroyd and lambasting them for their lack of advocacy. I was asking a question and giving my own personal answer to the question. Maybe don't tell me what to do either, hon <3

Just giving my opinion. Sorry I offended you with my entirely rhetorical phrasing.

I actually didn't even know where you stand. I had genuinely assumed that you were making a counter-argument for the sake of conversation, and that your own opinion was undecided. Otherwise, what was this post made for, other than to argue and send condescending emoticons? :P

Mainly, to get *sensible* arguments as to why celebrities might not want to jump up on an autism-advocacy soapbox. "Because they don't have to" is a tautology that seems kind of unreasonable.

They *don't* have to, though. If they do, it's a good thing. If they don't, it's nothing but a missed opportunity. Just because my opinion isn't iron-clad enough to you to change your mind about it doesn't mean you have to talk down to me or imply that my *opinion* isn't sensible

It seems like I agree with you, I'm just emotionally charged right now. What I actually want to know is why it's wrong for me to think less of celebs who fail to speak on autism for fear of consequences, while openly doing far more controversial/consequential crap.

Maybe it just sounds wrong to think less of them for refusing to speak on it, because what they're really doing wrong is failing to justify that decision in a way that doesn't paint autism as worse (or otherwise less worth talking about) than any of the other shit they're doing.

That I completely agree with.

Thanks for helping me figure out what it actually is that bothers me about celebs' taciturn nature towards autism. It's not really the lack of speaking out, it's the hypocrisy when viewed through the lens of other, more damaging actions.
