If someone doesn't want to talk to you it'll be obvious after just the initial "Hi" and simple friendly question, they won't answer, or semm uninterestd. In that case you can just say "enjoy the con!" and walk/turn away without have put yourself out there too far.
You're 100% on the money. It's one of those things where it's not tough once you start doing it, it's just tough to start.

A little booze doesn't hurt. Eventually you will find you don't need to, that first line isn't as hard to say as it used to be.
