This. Just yesterday I spent about an hour and a half implementing changes to our game's HUD that we decided not to use. Our designer had misgivings, but the concept art looked fine - yet in motion it was confusing. So I spent another 30 minutes revising the implementation.
Now, the average weirdly-egotistic programmer would moan about that hour and a half being "wasted", since the designer already suspected it wouldn't work. But you know what, thanks to that hour and a half, we *learned* something. So it was not wasted at all.

Honestly, in the moment I was mostly thinking about longer term learning - but when I was building websites for an ad agency, I had a similar experience on a regular basis. We didn't know if it would really work until we saw it in a page.

Doing ultra low level optimisation of maths primitives, some commits are only to add a comment "tried this form of the loop... but ran slower because X & Y cost more than the runtime saving of Z". It's all learning (and might save some repeated effort for whoever comes after me)
