My doctor sends my prescriptions into the central system electronically. I go to whatever pharmacy I want (usually Apotek), and take a number. My number gets called. I hand my ID to the pharmacist, and the pharmacist looks up my prescriptions on his or her computer.
Sometimes, there are multiple generic brands available. In that case, the pharmacist asks which brand I prefer, as sometimes certain brands are cheaper. I go with the cheapest one. The pharmacist prints, signs, and places labels on the boxes containing my blister-packed meds.
I pay for my meds - usually the equivalent of about $10-$20 or so - and go on my merry way. Basically, the US's pharmacies' dogged insistence on buying bulk medication is a gross inconvenience to all of us who simply want to pick up our medication and get on with our lives.
Just to clarify, I spent the first 28 years of my life in the US, moved to Sweden in November 2013, and have been on this medication for about 15 years now. So I'm not just some judgmental foreigner basing his opinions on hearsay. This is my unvarnished, first-hand experience.
