One would think you could avoid a busy-wait and still get realtime caught up with emulated time by simply running the main loop without ticking the scheduler (which is ostensibly still a busy-wait), but clearly @aaronsgiles knew something I don't. :-)
For even more timing fun, write one in JavaScript. I use the word fun loosely.
That's part of the problem, I'm currently doing my homework to try to make the Emscripten build of MAME a bit more performant. That's what I was going to do this evening, then I discovered Staxel, and now the rest of my weeknights are booked solid.
