Is there a viable solution for Pi owners? Can the latest codebade compile and run reasonably well on Pi?

It's better to cross-compile on a more powerful machine. As for running reasonably well, the answer is "it depends". A modern Pi 3 can handle up to and including the Neo-Geo or so, but e.g. Donkey Kong will keel over due to the component-level analog simulation for sound effects.

But, they won’t do it in such a conveniently tiny package for so little power consumption. Why isn’t the MAME used by the Pi more current than that?

I agree, plus the Retropie interface isn’t really suited for MAME in my opinion. I like having more classification options since arcade input hardware varies wildly from game to game.

It doesn't surprise me that it'd be running 0.62 or something like that. Most Pi users probably only want Mame to play Pac-Man or Space Invaders (which its done since inception).

Plus the processing power isn't there. Seriously they've ported .174 to Retropie and it doesn't work at all.

Oh PLEASE. If MAME was rubbish for you back then, then your computer was rubbish too.

Some people may not find a large PC convenient. There are a few x86 SBCs physically close or compatible to the Pi. I personally use the UP-Board, but I'm sure there are others that can get the job done.
