Let me take you on a brief journey about why I hate the OBJ model anti-format. Note that these reasons are just ones which I gleaned over the course of writing an OBJ loader yesterday. I'm sure there are plenty more reasons, too.
1) Some implementations support negative indices for face parameters, which are interpreted as indexing backwards from the end of the position/texcoord/normal tables. Some don't.

2) Some implementations, like Blender, export a corresponding .mtl (OBJ material library) file with non-standard parameters, like "Ke", which I assume is an emissive channel, but heck if I can find documentation on that.

3) Some implementations use the "d" keyword (short for "dissolve") to specify the translucency of an object. Some use the "Tr" keyword instead. Why? Because screw coders, apparently.

Basically, OBJ is a model file format in the same way that a raging dumpster fire is a hand-warmer.
