Well, the measured impact is nearer 50% (complete TLB rebuild) on phoronix, for syscall mostly workloads. On a desktop, the 5% number is probably more realistic. AWS and Azure and all those cloud providers? 30% is probably right on the money. That's a lot of CPU to lose.
And that definitely sucks. But I've seen innumerable people in tech channels asking "should I ditch my Intel CPU because of all this performance loss?" due to lousy reporting not making any sort of clarifications along those lines.

Heh. Yeah. Here's phoronix: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=linux-415-x86pti … The reality is, this makes AMD chips look maybe 30% better, and data centers looking to fill out, will suddenly see EPYC as a massive winner. That's how this is gonna play out.

Except Google just released the same exploit for AMD and ARM processors too.
