I think this is referring (that's not the right word- implying?) to the BS fox-dog incident at a con as of recent, which TBF, that is a rare case of someone being extra stupid; if not, the I agree w/you and this is an uncalled for pointing of fingers.

Doubt the OP knows about this year's incident in Midwest Furfest but mentioning now I'd say it is relevant, especially since it took almost 2 days for people to listen to the most well known fox owner when he says that foxes are not service animals.

they’re pointing it at furries because there have been a handful of real incidents at fur cons.

It isn't blaming furries; it's someone calling out to their local community for awareness. And yeah there are folks in furry who clearly would benefit us all by learning their actions have consequences on folks like me. It doesn't hurt anything to pass around this knowledge.
