Additionally, I'd like to take the time to mention that MAME's Apple 2 emulation includes support for the "SAM" (Software Automatic Mouth) and Echo 2 speech boards, which saw some use in assistive technology at the time.

For a lot of non talking games, each thing you did had a different pitched beep. For example in double dragon 2, when you hit an enemy there was a high beep and when you got hit a low beep. Use to just memorize what was what and had fun imagining what was happening.
