Well it's funny you should say that - I've been a developer on MAME for about 15 years or so, and in roughly the past year, our emulation of exactly those sorts of handhelds has gotten rather good!
If you have a glance at my tweets over the past couple of days, you might find some things that are right up your alley. And if not, no harm done!
