Couldn’t I just donate my pledge to the project anyway? I’m sure the devs could use it. Or is that too messy logistically?
There's no one donation point for MAME in general (the developers tend to shy away from financial matters). The Dumping Union, however, generally doesn't involve itself in anything but arcade-related matters. So in this case, I'm pretty much shouldering the entire thing.
There's no such thing as a rainy-day slush fund with the MAME team, it's pretty much just "Hey, I'll buy this." But that generally only works when it's individual things that one is buying. Larger auctions naturally require getting the word out, and are a collective effort.
