How do you talk to someone that involves a topic they may not understand? 1) I feel like it might be condescending to even do a light explanation. 2) I feel like asking them "have you heard of <arcane BS>" is rude too. I've been "lightly explaining" lately, not sure if best way..

No best answer, everyone is different (as your comments already show). Be polite and considerate and even if you picked the lesser of two approaches in someone’s eyes all will be good.
Definitely this. The most important thing is to have a courteous dynamic, everything else is just details. I might be lucky, but I work in an office where it's generally assumed that the person you're talking to isn't a jerk, people just speak freely and ask questions if need be.

I don't want to mention where I work until I'm done with my 6-month probationary period, but I do have to admit that the company is something of a unicorn in that regard: People are open about what they do and don't know, and it makes giving explanations 1000000x easier.

I may be spoiled, but the two companies (and teams within the companies in case that matters too) I have worked for are just like this as well. Honestly, maybe because I have been lucky, if I came across a company not like this I would quit.
