You can get them in plastic - if you're using a pBone - or you can get them in silver. There aren't a whole lot of other options here.

So I can stick with a plastic mouthpiece with very little physical volume, or I can pay 125 Euro for a silver mouthpiece. GEE.

Now, there's no tonal reason for going with silver over any other metal. As a follower of mine said, the tone is produced by the bell.

There's essentially zero reason why mouthpieces couldn't be made in stainless steel, or some other, more pragmatic, metal.
