Having played through the first six levels of Cuphead so far, I don't think it's the punishing, hard-as-nails platformer people say it is.
I'd say games as a whole have trended to 'easier'. They've become more approachable, with console and computer gaming coming into their own.

I suppose this is the natural evolution of gaming. It just seems that there's less challenge.

If anything it would seem the lack of need to feed quarters would make a great challenge more appealing.
