Depends on the nature of the position. The few times I've interviewed people, I've cared way more about comprehension than rote knowledge.

If an applicant expects to Google for some algorithm specific to the project, that's a bad sign, sure. I totally agree on that point.
I don't need someone to have an encyclopedic knowledge of, say, every tree algorithm. I do expect them to know how to *find* that knowledge.

Thanks! I definitely agree that there are roles where encyclopedic knowledge is preferred. But games are a bit odd that way. :D
