As I understand it, latency, on an OS level, has gradually been creeping upward, thanks to composited DWM environments, and more abstraction
Not only that, but latency has been creeping upward in terms of output devices as well. TVs are absolutely godawful these days for that.

Why my own TV's "Game Mode" still has measurable latency that makes playing emulated platform games misery is just beyond me.

Meanwhile, from the opposite direction, we have the VR industry fighting tooth-and-nail to bring *down* latency as much as possible.
