Not to mention the reason why it "hangs there" is it has zero initial Y-axis velocity, and has high mass, thus proportionally high inertia.

Acceleration due to gravity is the same regardless of mass. Soccer ball, ball of lead, ball of balsa wood, wouldn't have mattered.
