I disagree. Unlike being gay, being on the autism spectrum won't get you dragged behind a truck in some states, but I'm still out.

Point is, if you're in the position for folks to listen to you about autism, then you're probably not risking much by speaking out.

Maybe where you live; here, they still get attacked, killed, and abused. Sadly. I agree with your overall premise, though.
