It's a shame, really. Between sound, video and main RAM, it was just shy of the N64's stock 4MB. If the former had 8MB, oh man...

my hope in the future is optional "power packs" for emulated consoles to allow people to code insane homebrews. 128mb PS1, etc.

To an extent, such things already exist for real hardware, and as such they're potential emulation targets for MAME. :-)

I played 8mb games for PS1 before they got chopped and Psygnosis had to give behind the scenes consults to get them to fit

sometimes it was easy. Like with Adventures of Lomax, they just yanked two backplanes. Lots of lost art/anim though
