You know it's an odd error when an Apple support rep tells you how to enable debug mode in the App Store so you can nuke the download cache.

iTunes, Disk Utility, Notes and Reminders all have debug menus as well. They come in handy every now and then.

By the way, if you want an easy way to enable those, download an app called Onyx. It also is really good at junk/caches!
