I see that #Minecraft 1.17 has come out recently. Given that there are in fact worldgen changes, and I run a server, can someone tell me if it's still the same situation as previous ones - no back-compat, but newly-generated chunks will contain the new content?

From what I understand, the majority of 1.17 will come in the second half of the update, and the huge change that makes everything incomparable will roll out then. The first part we have now needs a datapack to enable those changes :0 I could be wrong of course

What was the "Caves & Cliffs" update has been split into 1.17 and 1.18, with the major worldgen changes (namely, world height extension and the caves/cliffs themselves) coming in at 1.18. Meanwhile, 1.17 just released with most of the content, and not as a data pack.

It's easy enough to see from the bugfix list that what is now 1.17 does involve changes to the underlying Java code. What you're probably thinking of is that a data pack - the "Caves & Cliffs: Part II Preview" - has *also* been released alongside 1.17, which is Part I itself.

Aye, as usual the wiki does a great job of summarizing it: https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Java_Edition_1.17 … The biome changes, major mountain/cave-gen changes, and world-height increase have been held off for 1.18. But more broadly, it seems that things like copper ore, etc. will still gen in 1.17.
