"'It's like Minecraft without Notch,' one wrote about Cawthon's possible censure. 'It's a huge hole in the community that we can't fill to this day.'" If a bigot leaving a community leaves a hole in that community, that community has some soul-searching to do.

I'm so behind. Is Notch the bigot or is it Cawthon? Also I felt no difference in minecraft after Notch left

Cawthon is getting blowback for political contributions that skew heavily right. Notch is the guy who more or less went on a transphobic tirade. In either case, I believe it's important to mentally partition the creator from the creation, as both FNAF and MC are damn fine games.

Personally, I'm on the fence about the whole Cawthon thing. I find it disagreeable, particularly being in the LGBTQ community myself, but at the end of the day the man is free to spend his money on what he wants, and people are free to express that it's distasteful.

The only thing I find truly insufferable is him dragging up the "cancelled" buzzword, as it's a dodge, and always has been, particularly from folks who cast their lot in with the same party that's tried to cancel D&D, heavy metal, the Dixie Chicks, and French fries, among others.

Good lord I wasn't aware of any of this. And why of all things are FRENCH FRIES on that list? I feel like there are more concerning things then chunks of fried potatoes.

Also I entirely agree with the partitioning thing. Too many times have I seen "This thing is awful now because the creator is awful!". Like, alright but what about the other people that helped make the game? feels like their hard work is being invalidated cuz of that mentality

Agree. The same thing happened with Cyberpunk, but for different reasons. Numerous people in the gaming community absolutely flipped out on devs who, to a broad extent, had nothing to do with the endemic management problems of the studio.

Thats a big gripe I have with gaming. If people are gonna dislike a game, or anything else for that matter, it should be because of the thing itself and not the people outside of it

I would argue for a middle ground; a good product made by an objectionable person doesn't necessarily invalidate the product, but it doesn't necessarily validate the person, either. For products that are the sum total of numerous individuals' work, though, it gets murkier.

It's easy to cast upright devs under the bus for working at EA, or ATVI, or Ubisoft or whatnot. But people outside the industry have a skewed view rooted in confirmation bias about how easy it really is to just uproot your whole life and go indie, or find a "better" employer.
