Bear with me.
The T-101 is operating on his pre-programmed knowledge, playing the cards he was dealt, until the read-only switch is deactivated halfway through the movie.
"Fitting in" isn't a matter of masking. Masking is abusing yourself to meet an unrealistic set of social criteria. But there is absolutely a learning process. Your brain becomes a "learning computer", to quote the movie. There's a gradual shift, if you let it happen.

Just being aware of the fact that your own thought processes can radically differ, at times, from other people allows for a radically different perspective on things. You start approaching social situations from a more analytical standpoint.

Even if the end result doesn't change, your behavior doesn't change, it's a more informed perspective. To an extent, it's why I wonder if so many UI/UX designers aren't themselves, perhaps, on the spectrum. But yeah. That's my take on it, anyway.
