I'm re-watching Terminator 2 at the moment. Maybe it's the autism, but to me, one of the most underrated comedic bits is when John screams at the T-101 to "PUT THE GUN DOWN, NOW!", and Arnie proceeds to gently place the gun on the pavement while chaos erupts all around.
In a sense, I consider it to be the starting bookend to the subsequent scene where the T-101 kneecaps the gate guard at Pescadero with the simple comment, "He'll live." I mean, yeah. You tell the T-101 to do something, you get the most literal possible interpretation.
iirc the director’s cut contains a couple more scenes that really help the story line that make this make more sense. At the gas station they switch some in his head and change his learning parameters.
