Last night I wired up the Smart Keyboard controller in MAME based on scan codes provided by @PulkoMandy, only it didn't work.
So they provided a logic analyzer capture of a regular controller, and a Smart Keyboard controller, from power-on.
Turns out the difference is that the Smart Keyboard controller pretty much says "Hi, I am a keyboard" to the console from power-on, whereas a regular controller stays silent. Stay tuned for progress!
I wonder if I could run on a VSmile?
