Since it's Mother's Day over in the US, I'd like to give a shout out to my own mom - an incredibly hard woman who takes precisely zero shit from anyone and gives zero fucks about getting what's hers, yet who is an incredibly loving, accepting woman.

Set the Wayback Machine for 2000. I'm on the verge of turning 15, starting to discover who I am. At the time, she's dating this dude named Frank, who turns out to be a complete dickflute (but that's a story to itself). I finally come out to her after realizing I'm not straight.

Just before I'm off to bed, I sit down and tell her: "Mom, I have something to say, and I think I've been so stressed lately because I haven't said it. I'm pretty sure I'm bisexual." She nods a bit, then just goes: "Well, I'm not going to have to fight you for Frank, am I?"

At the time, I'm absolutely mortified at the sudden levity of what had always been portrayed as this intensely serious situation. But she laughs, gives me a hug, and says, "Ry, what did you expect? I've always said I'll love you however you are."

Because, yeah, that's true. When I was growing up, she once recounted a story from when I was still just a baby. She was meeting up with some other parents to kibitz with other parents, more for their own ability to vent than any socialization among the infants.
