for gamedev. I believe there really could be space for such a thing.

I've actually already started :P I started on a very small part of it though, serializing data - which I think is a very important part of it.
Cynically, I'm not surprised there aren't any particularly good open-source solutions right now. It's one of those things that takes a ton of effort to do right, and the payoff isn't immediately tangible after a night of coding. If/when you make it happen, it'll be huge.
