GNOME: oversimplify everything based on one engineer's idea of how things should work, even if it annoys everyone else KDE: make every single thing we can think of tunable in a giant settings UI so it's impossible to find a needed option, much less test for corner case bugs
The fact that even someone currently studying comp. sci can clock that the FOSS community has a problem with good UX makes me sad. Good UX is frustratingly subjective though. To really get a handle requiresva large cohort of closely monitored users focused on that effort. Something that no OS project can possibly afford. So it becomes a self feeding spiral of "adequacy"
