Love SGI machines and have maybe 10 between 4D/780GT to Octane2. Always dabbled with IrisGL & OoenGL on them. Hardware had really interesting unique features like alpha blending on top of live video
The funny thing is, the technical magic was in being able to ingest live video, and having enough bitplanes for proper alpha blending at all. The act of blending geometry against live video was just another thing you could do at that point.

If you have a null modem cable and time to kill, I'd love it if you could get at me with an exact list of the machines you've got. Most SGI machines can be dumped from the PROM monitor over a serial console by printing memory contents. Not an ideal dumping method, but it works.

The 4D/780GT has a 68000 in the graphics subsystem and i seem to remember poking about a serial console. Other systems are Personal Iris, Indigo2 (5 of them), O2, Octane2 with dual processor and v10 gfx.

Yeah, 4D lacked texture mapping but had ability to tessalate & approximate with vertex colors pretty Quickly. i seem to remember multiple frame buffers with hardware compositing. Happy to poke around and dump eproms
