What I'm really asking for here is for tech companies to show they care about how their products work. To have the self-awareness to ask "are we doing the best we can?" And the responses which proclaim this to be impossible or impractical are very concerning to me.https://twitter.com/TechConnectify/status/1371598973723537411 …

If you are a software developer, you need other people in your company telling you what you can improve. Don't let your ego stand in their way. If you're in the C-suite, you need people looking for problems before they're caught. Or even just looking for things to improve.

In the hotel world (and others, I presume), one of the great mantras is "MBWA" or Management By Walking Around. Survey your hotel. Look for peeling wallpaper. Carry light bulbs and change those that are out. Don't wait until someone tells you about the problem, seek them out!

It is *astonishing* to me that this mindset isn't everywhere, but apparently it's not. It seems like it's in the best interest of any business to spend time looking for things to improve. Time that you've invested, so your users (and guests) don't have to.

Dear Technology Connections: The race to the bottom ended MBWA. It was fired in the last layoff round, when executives were reassured by a consultant who knew "for definite" that the only important thing was to maximize company profit. This is true for game studios, too.

A large part of why I entered the hotel business was that it's one of the last places where the quality of the product directly impacts profitability. You can't get away with a hotel that's run like shit because eventually it swiftly fails. It was a rare honest business.

This isn't to say that hotels don't have serious problems - for one, housekeeping isn't paid nearly what they should be. Like all service industries, wages are horrible. But you couldn't be sloppy. Your customers lived with you. You couldn't piss them off.

So, the game industry circa the 90's. I apologize for being flippant, but there are some real learnings that come from companies that have been successful despite modern business management, and companies that are successful because of the round rejection of it.

What I'm saying is, none of what you're saying is wrong, but the game companies doing it right, like my employer, do it right despite paid articles screaming from the proverbial trees that they'd do a fraction of a percent better if they'd just treat us just a bit less humaely..

That's what history has always been made of - Incremental changes. I doubt the execs over at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory's direct competitors implemented instant and sweeping changes to make employees' lives better, despite the tragedy. Capitalism is just a *tiny* bit awful.

We all feel passionate about tech companies because tech companies are near and dear to our respective hearts. Tech companies can do a lot better than they're doing now. It's also important to sometimes reflect on how far things have come, as you yourself often do.

To tie everything back to the "QA team" proposal: It works great when the testers are in-house for a given studio and answerable to "the house". Ask just about any game dev with in-house QA. They're awesome. Publisher QA is not.
