I would hope anyone who's old enough to have first-hand knowledge of it would be unafraid to admit it. Because it wasn't. It was less fun than literal text-only MUCKs.

That's my point. The "good old days" were never really particularly good in most niche communities. Or even the world as a whole. In the past 2 years I've seen more full-throated rejection of creeps and warming of the furry community toward marginalized people than ever before.
