As someone diagnosed with ASD at age 12 who is now 35, I would ask your son this: In what way is he *not*, ultimately, still just a normal guy with some quirks? What is normal, anyway?

It's been a couple of years now, and he is slowly working his way back to that. The first year was pretty bad though. He was working with an OT, but seems to have ended up with nothing much more than a box full of empty worksheets and planners, etc.

I know, and I wouldn't suggest people not get a diagnosis - it's more likely to help than not. And not just legally, but for those who have felt awkward, different, etc. to know it's not 'just them'.

Absolutely! I just wanted to touch on the last line of your tweet is all. Ideally, folks would just accept people and their quirks, working together to ameliorate the negatives while buttressing the positives, without the need for legal force. Sadly, we're not there yet.
