Oh. I thought it qas an in joke. If anyone x-rays the chip they see the surgeon left in the scissors... but now you mentioned it they are hairdresser or barber's clippers.

Would've been funny but no, Dave Evans and Ivan Sutherland (the founders of E&S) were in direct competition with Jim Clark (founder of SGI) at the time, with the chip in question being part of their answer to Clark's "Geometry Engine" chip.
