In the minutes leading up to the new year here in Stockholm, I'd like to give a lot of credit to @ArrowheadGS for doing something that few companies do, which is a complete about-face on company policies pertaining to remote work.

During the Google Hangout meet that was our holiday get-together this year, it was announced that this marks a new way of viewing remote work here. In principle, a person should be able to go skiing up in Nörrland, then hit the laptop for some work. Remote work is important.

Collectively, we've thoroughly shown that we can work remotely to a degree that is only slightly different from how we work in-person. And that's something that's priceless for the company leadership to have acknowledged.

So yeah. There have been various tweets going out about, "What was normal prior to 2020 that you don't want to see come back?" I, for one, don't want to see such an emphasis on seat-warming. If a person, or people, can function as a productive team remotely, then let them do it.

Hopefully they'll give you the option of occasional face-to-face meetings. Remote is good, but sometimes sitting down face to face gives even better results for some tasks. I'd still prefer remote for 80% of it, though!

Truth be told, the worst part of the remote work this year hasn't been the remote work itself, but the fact that it wasn't an option. I'd love nothing more than to go into the office and kibitz with my coworkers. But if I can't do that safely, well, I just ain't going to do it.
