6502 data sheet < 40 pages. Modern 8 bit microcontroller data sheet, about 400 pages. Modern Intel chip data sheet, > 4000 pages.
As for your assertion that the text quality hasn't improved, I really don't even know where to go here. Proportional fonts are now a thing. Fonts that involve more than an 8x8 glyph hard-coded into an EEPROM for the basic ASCII subset is now a thing.

In the past 20+ years, the whole concept of user interface design has gone completely out the window, replaced by a facile one-size-fits-all dogma that helps nobody. But I can't agree that there have been "no improvements" to text rendering since the 6502 days.

But, yes, your modern microcontroller incorporates a whole bunch of peripheral and power management that the 6502 couldn't imagine, and the x86 instruction set has gained so many layers that... Well... There's a reason that Apple is starting fresh...
