6502 data sheet < 40 pages. Modern 8 bit microcontroller data sheet, about 400 pages. Modern Intel chip data sheet, > 4000 pages.
I know, it's crazy, it's almost like modern MCUs and modern CPUs have provisions to do more things than the 6502 did.

It's not clear why. I mean, the time from me hitting a key to that appearing on a screen on a word processor hasn't gone down. And the quality of the text displayed on the screen also isn't improving...

If it "hasn't gone down" then by your own admission you can't differentiate a response time under roughly 16.6ms. Possibly higher than that, since latency has only increased since then. Yet the most common displays only have a 60Hz refresh rate, so exactly what do you want here?
