Good luck with that, and not in a sarcastic way. If that means you drop out of emulation entirely, well.. I'll still be here plugging away as long as I'm still alive, so feel free to say hello, or to even come back if you decide it's interesting. There's still so much left to do.

Have you ever considered writing a book on the development process of Higan? For what it's worth I really enjoyed reading your articles on Ars Technica, especially how you break down the problem and weigh up the various solutions.

@TheMogMiner has been considering working on a video series about emulation as well. This is an area where there's a lot of room for stories and details, technical breakdowns, etc.2 vastausta 0 uudelleentwiittausta 3 tykkäystä -
Thanks. I'll check it out. There does seem to be a vacuum of knowledge about accurate emulation and the more content available the more eyes we can get working on the same problems.

It's not that there's a vacuum of knowledge about accurate emulation, it's that there's a vacuum of users with an appreciation for it. The average user doesn't give a good god damn about Speedy Gonzalez if it means playing the most popular games on a dumpster-dived 486.

It's only through years of effort and outspoken advocacy that Near has even managed to make a dent in what I perceive as a wall of obstinate users. At the end of the day, there's a marked gulf between people who care about preservation and people who just want free games.

Honestly, I'm just about the first in line to take another few swings at the jerking, shuddering horse-corpse that is the FPGA/emulation argument, but you're being completely unfair here. The work of folks like
@furrtek and@topapate is definitively more accurate than software.2 vastausta 0 uudelleentwiittausta 2 tykkäystä
As a point of fact, if it weren't for @topapate's FPGA implementation of 1942 in particular, I likely never would have been able to suss out how 1942 splits its sprite list and fix a 22-year-old emulation bug in MAME.

Honestly, I don't see the point of converting software emulators to HDL. My only interest is to dig into chips to help making both better :x
