The field of UX design has literally never "peaked" because centuries ago, one-off devices were fabricated solely for their makers, and with the advent of industrialisation, UX took an immediate back seat in favour of instant and permanently-rising profit margins.

My users want the thing to work when they power it up. Preferably no interaction ever. :D (The customer has no idea what the user needs or how the thing works, but that's different.)

It sounds like you're being contracted by a company to make software for a group of users that company doesn't even understand, in which case the buck stops with the company, not you.
