Flat-screen TVs are the worst thing to ever happen to gaming. I used to be an expert at Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and other music/rhythm games. At NordicFuzzCon '19, when there was a system connected to an actual CRT, it was like nirvana. Not anymore. It's all laggy bullshit.
No, the reason the games fell out of favour was pure market saturation. I have a pretty extensive series of tweets from a while ago as to what it was like being on the porting team from all of the Wii versions of GH developed by Vicarious Visions except GH3, but to summarize:
-
-
Both HMX and ATVI independently came to the conclusion that they could somehow sell a copy of either Rock Band or Guitar Hero to every person on Earth if only they pushed the correct genre buttons, overlooking the fact that some people just don't like music/rhythm games.
-
Anyone with their finger within a mile of the pulse could see that that wasn't the case, but both companies plodded along with quarterly updates anyway, HMX with Green Day, Beatles, LEGO, et al, and the latter with Aerosmith, Metallica, Van Halen, and Greatest Hits.
