I used to like playing the final entries in the series (Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, Rock Band 3, and DJ Hero 2). Not anymore. Now it's a fuck-fest of me spending 15 minutes trying to calibrate this shit, calling it "good enough", then rage-quitting on expert-level songs.

I remember a time when I was working at
@VvisionsStudio working on the next Wii port of Guitar Hero, and could master a song within the span of a day on my little CRT monitor. Now, it's just not even fucking fun anymore.Näytä tämä ketju -
Hell, at one point I was one of the top-10 players on the Xbox 360 leaderboards for the first iteration of DJ Hero. Can't even hope to reclaim that sort of position anymore.

Like, what the fuck, is it really that hard to just make a mode for a TV that just shits the pixels from the HDMI stream into a framebuffer, and immediately presents it? Or the audio packets from the same, shoving them out the DAC? Why is this such a fucking struggle?

Doesn't it literally take MORE person-hours to develop some post-processing algorithm that takes so many frames to process on the shit-house, anemic MCU that you people are insisting on putting into TVs? Why the fuck is this even an issue?

And no, don't talk to me about "game mode" on your TV. Don't even start. I've had "Game Mode" enabled on my TV for years, but the thing still has upwards of 40-50ms of video lag and easily 10-15ms of audio lag. Don't even fucking start with me.

If you're just pushing the raw pixels out to the framebuffer and pushing the raw audio samples out to the DAC, this wouldn't BE an issue, but it IS, so clearly there's some bullshit going on even in this supplemental mode, so what the fuck?

I've worked in film, TV and VFX for over a decade. Trying to explain low-lag or gaming in general to broadcast and display engineers is hopeless. Thankfully companies like LG are finally listening, although there's still a tonne of work to be done.

From your bio I see that you, too, are a CRT enthusiast. How do you yourself go about explaining to people that no matter how good flat-screen TVs get, blocking a white backlight in negative color space will never get even close to the color gamut of actual phosphors?

yup! i was Pretty Good at Guitar Hero. Never had a flat-screen when I played it. Didn't even have component cables. But the first time I played on a flat screen with a wireless guitar I was god awful and thought it was my fault.
