I keep seeing this tweet about how hyper-independence is a sign of abuse. And I agree with it, but I'm not sure how to internalize it. I've been wanting to start a video series doing short docus on the history of various emulators, but I pretty much *have* to do it myself.
This hits home with me, really. Perhaps it's just that you need someone to look at the changes and write a concise summary, in the sense that you might be too mentally attached to the minutiae to be able to summarize it?

That's possible, and Github even seems to allow for that; I'm seeing a lot of edited commit messages to the point it seems to be an acknowledged thing even outside of MAME as the systems are in place to allow the repository owners / people merging PRs to do that.

Could just be that you should let certain folks know when you're about to send a PR. so we can prepare a relevant squash-commit message.
