No, really, my bad. I forgot that a company that's spent the past 20+ years cultivating a brand should be perfectly okay with people using that brand as a pivot point to promote their own fly-by-night, creatively-empty goals that wouldn't exist without some other fucker's ideas.

And even then, I'm of the opinion that anything not actively being developed for ~20 years should automatically be returned to the public domain. If you don't use it, you lose it. But these companies are actively using it, and have been for years, so what's the excuse?

I mostly agree - which is why I'm even squeamish about piracy of dead games. There's lots of stuff like Red Earth/War-Zard that is effectively abandoned (and things almost as abandoned like the entire Darkstalkers franchise) that I'd love legit access to (even if I had to pay).

As it stands there's no way to do that and it's frustrating. I don't mind whether its free or at some reasonable cost.

It's infuriating when you're trying to advocate for actual IP law reform and the loudest people in the room are screaming that Nintendo won't let them make their own Mario.
