Huh, look at that. I actually got a music royalty payment from SOCAN, a whopping $0.67 from Facebook somehow. Music royalties make absolutely no sense to me. I have no idea how any of that works.

It doesn't. From everything I've read, royalty payments are inevitably a pittance for artists without a back-breaking amount of self-promotion, merch-flogging, and gig work. The entertainment industry, not just music, is founded on lies to ensure a steady stream of fresh meat.
Music isn't my niche, game development is, but even in the latter industry, the ~3 people at the top of any given company get richer while the rank and file developers get a "sense of pride and accomplishment", and the hope of a fraction-of-a-fraction bonus. Burn it all down.
