I haven't seen this asked, but it might've been: Why do people try to downplay COVID-19 by comparing death rates to influenza? Those numbers are alarming enough, but wouldn't an equivalent be to compare COVID-19 to the common cold, as they're both coronaviruses? Yikes.
Sure, but my point was more one of proportionality. The only people I've heard compare the death rates of influenza and Covid with any seriousness are science-deniers, but even so - comparing the death rate to an actually similar virus, the common cold, is outright terrifying.
