You're conflating two issues. Freedom of press isn't freedom to defame. The issue here is that it's become arbitrary, and not fully litigated or codified into law, what exactly a "public figure" is. Or, for that matter, why there should be heightened scrutiny for such cases.

If you want to argue that the heightened scrutiny for public figures under defamation law shouldn't exist, then I'm right there with you. But what you're doing right now is conflating two separate issues. 1A is unrelated to defamation.
