I have an occasional tendency to wake up in the middle of the night, scrawl a quick note down, and go back to sleep. Sort of worried by last night's note, which is not jogging my memory as to context: "What could I sacrifice?"
There's literally a comic from @MADmagazine about this back in the 90's.
Guy wakes up out of a dead sleep with some revolutionary idea. Writes it down on a sticky note. Gets back up in the morning to review his amazing idea: "Siggle the mmph and muggle all cobsko ugglephmps."

William James, early psychological pioneer. He was experimenting with the use of (novel at the time) nitrous oxide. He experienced an ecstatic revelation of universal truth and wrote it in his journal: "Overall there is a smell of fried onions."
