It's very simple: MAME2003 does not give an accurate representation of arcade games. It never has. It never will. The goal of MAME is to accurately preserve arcade games. You can literally dumpster-dive a PC that can run modern MAME. Your excuse for MAME2003 doesn't hold water.
The only reason to use MAME2003 is if you're using some ARM machine with piss-poor specs, like a Raspberry Pi. Which is fine, if you don't actually care about an authentic experience.

My "excuse"? I have the latest MAME on my desktop, and I have MAME 2003 on my Pi. One is hooked up to a TV and the other is hooked up to a monitor. Many thousands of people have a Pi hooked up to a TV which is not attached to their desktop.
